Homesickness Policy
At Camp Wakeshma, we know that homesickness is a normal part of the camp experience for many children. Feeling homesick often means a child has strong connections with family and home. Our goal is to help campers work through those feelings, build confidence, and discover they are capable of succeeding away from home.
Our staff are trained to support campers through homesickness by building relationships, keeping campers engaged in activities, helping them connect with peers, and providing encouragement throughout the day.
The first day at camp is often the hardest. Because of this, Camp Wakeshma follows a “24-Hour Homesickness Support Policy.” We ask families to allow campers at least 24 hours to adjust before expecting contact from camp regarding homesickness concerns. In most cases, campers begin to settle in, make friends, and enjoy camp activities during this adjustment period.
If a camper is struggling, counselors and camp leaders will provide additional support and encouragement. Campers do not make phone calls home, as direct contact often increases homesickness and makes the adjustment process more difficult. Instead, campers are encouraged to write letters home and stay actively involved in camp life.
If significant homesickness continues beyond the first 24 hours and camp staff feel additional support is needed, camp leadership will contact parents to discuss the situation and determine next steps together.
Parents can help prepare their child for success by:
- Talking positively about camp
- Practicing short periods away from home before camp
- Keeping goodbyes brief at check-in
- Avoiding promises of early pickup if camp feels difficult
- Letting camp staff know about any helpful comfort strategies
The vast majority of campers who experience homesickness adjust successfully and go on to have a fun, rewarding, and memorable camp experience.
Please note that no refunds are provided for campers who leave camp early due to homesickness.
